Rehabilitation & extension of the Covered Market + requalification of the Place de Chauny
Lâme is an international architecture and design studio, based in Paris — founded by Alexandre Lahyani and Angel Menendez in 2013.
Lâme is driven by the question of heritage and works, in its achievements, on the inherent issues, such as transmission and repair, by creating and recomposing architectural and cultural heritage, vernacular and popular, which uniqueize places and unite users.
At the beginning of 2025, Lâme delivered a high place of local life in a small authentic town in Hauts-de-France, in the Aisne, with a rich Art Deco heritage: the Place du Marché Couvert de Chauny, inaugurated this Friday.
Lâme - in co-contracting with GRUET Ingéniérie / LEMA paysage - has composed a central place there because it is a major part of the life of the city, through an architectural intervention accompanied by an urban and landscape reflection, respecting the existing and aiming to:
- rehabilitate the Chauny Covered Market
- requalify the Place du Marché Couvert
- imagine a modular outdoor canopy that can, in particular, accommodate the outdoor stalls of the market.
With the new Place du Marché Couvert de Chauny, Lâme creates and deploys the same architectural language that unites the interior and the exterior.
The rehabilitation and extension of the Covered Market coupled with the requalification of the Place make it possible to adapt to new uses and climatic hazards, to renew the attractiveness and to affirm the dynamism of the revitalized center of a city of less than 20,000 inhabitants in the north of France.
